Skating Coach Certification Program

The Level 1 hockey skating coach certification is an on-line, on-demand program. You can register for, and take the course, anywhere in the World. You can register when you want, move through the chapters at your own speed, and take the test when you’re ready. Please click on the video to the right to watch a detailed overview of the Level.

The course consists of the following:

7 Chapters
Observation of the skating characteristics of NHL and elite female players with YouTube videos
Skill Analysis of the Forward Stride
Observation of 2 skating clinics taught by Dr Mike
A digital DVD with 101 skating drills
A test at the end which you have to pass in order to become a certified coach.

There are 3 levels of certification. The above-mentioned information is for the on-line Level 1. It is entirely on-line with no on-ice component. There are also Levels 2 and 3. Levels 2 and 3 are done in-person, either in Calgary or by Dr Mike going to a town/city to work 1-on-1, small group, or large group of coaches.

Level 2 – The Coaches Model: Information about coaching, teaching, demonstrating drills/skills, keeping words to a minimum, creating ideal teaching/learning environment, and giving feedback (the most important variable in teaching and learning). Classroom and on-ice learning.

Level 3 – Review the other 26 game-performance skating characteristics, ie: turning, backward skating, pivots, acceleration, etc. Review how to perform each skating skill, watch NHL or elite females perform these skating skills, and review drills to work on these skills. Classroom and on-ice learning.

Learning Objectives for Level 1

Understand the 4 skating characteristics of fast hockey players
Arm movement side-to-side
Wide stride with a lot of space between skates.
Low, quick recovery after push-off.
Recovery skate lands on ice in-line with shoulder-hip-knee to get skate on inside edge to start push-off quickly.
Identify research showing objectively what are the skating characteristics of fast hockey players.
Watch videos of NHL players (or fast females) to see how players skate during a game.
Apply the research to teach biomechanically correct skating.
Develop the ability to analyze skating skills and give feedback to players for skill development/improvement.
